X NO.3 1 EDITOR'S COLUMN In a recent interview with Narinder Nath Mrs. Maneka Gandhi said , " Punjab problem has become the problem of the Sikh commun- ity throughout India . Sikhs are complete- ly alienated and they feel insecure . " Over the last couple of years the Governm- ent of India has been using all the resources at its command to depict the Sikh community as not loyal to the countr- y . Any violent act in Punjab and the surrounding areas is blamed on the Sikhs , not on individual Sikhs but on the Sikh community , in other words a Sikh is a suspect , because he is a Sikh , not that he has committed any act of violence . Secondly , any act against the Sikh comm- unity is , almost , taken as an act of patriotism . Two events will show how differently the Sikhs and non - Sikhs are being treated . in Recently there were bomb explosions Delhi and other areas . Without any proof the Government machinery went on the prop- aganda offensive and the Sikh community was blamed for that . Within hours almost 2000 Sikhs were arrested . The treatment that they received is evident from the fact that at least a number of them died in police custody , due to torture and beatings . It shows that a Sikh has no Rights , guilty or not guilty is of little consequence . been Compare this with the treatment that the rioters , murderers of Sikhs in November authorities . received at the hands of the There , a number of ring leaders have awarded Parliament seats and even Ministe- rships . We have not heard of a single person out of those rioters prosecuted for murder . To begin with Rajiv Gandhi had openly declared that an Enquiry into the riots will go against the interests of the Sikhs . Logic of that is known to Rajiv only . Then they were promising an Inquiry as a package for the Punjab problem .
