First Sentence | June 5 & 6 1984 The Akal Takht (The Eternal Throne) was destroyed by the occupation forces of Indira Gandhi. The Takht of Delhi has destroyed the building of Akal Takht but can it destroy the Takht that is Akal (Eternal)? The Akal Takht, the most important of the buildings surrounding the Harmandir Sahib, is the highest seat of authority in the religious hierarchy. It symbolizes that phase in Sikh history when the concept of "shakti" (power) was married to that of "bhagti" (prayer). Founded by Guru Hargobind, the Sixth Guru, it was at various stages the venue of strategy sessions and of reform movements. The takht, or throne of the timeless, was built to be more than a match for any Mughal throne. ਦੇਗ ਤੇਗ ਫ਼ਤ ਹੈ 2310 World Sikh Organization 1133 Broadway, Suite 1425, New York, N.Y. 10010 (212) 242-7080 |
